Alloy 347 stainless steel, also called UNS S34700, is an austenitic stainless steel with columbium stabilization that is excellent in general corrosion resistance. It has better resistance to intergranular corrosion after the exposure in temperature ranging from 800 – 1500°F (427 – 816°C) into the chromium carbide precipitation range. Alloy 347 offers excellent oxidation resistance serving up to 1500°F (816°C), along with an existing creep strength and good low-temperature toughness.

The Stainless Steel 347 is basically composed of elements similar to grades 304 and 321, containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel.The grade 347 contains niobium as a stabilizing element against intergranular corrosion, hence giving additional stability at high temperatures. This feature also makes Alloy 347 very effective against higher-temperature settings, hence improving the general strength of the steel.

This addition of niobium is particularly useful in preventing precipitation of carbides, a factor that helps to protect the performance of the alloy against environmental degradation. This property enables Stainless Steel 347 Round Bars to find applications in cryogenic environments, where they have exhibited superior behavior compared with carbon and alloy steels.

Shielded fusion and resistance welding techniques can be used to join 347. Even though austenitic stainless steel welds do not harden upon cooling, they will be very durable. Due to the potential for carbon buildup in the weld area, oxyacetylene welding is not advised.
